20 inspirational quotes for those dealing with drug and alcohol abuse

I thought I’d put together some inspirational quotes. Of course, to many, an “inspirational quote” could be what their father or best friend told them ten years ago, but here are some quotes from famous or influential people. Some are related to addiction. Some are about adversity. Some may have been spoken in regards to specific situations, yet can be applied universally. Some I included for sheer awesomeness!

“The best way to make your dreams come true is to wake up.” -Paul Valery, Poet and Essayist, 1871-1945

NOTE: This is also a quote by Mohammed Ali

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle”  -Sun Tzu, from The Art of War

“I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.’”  -Mohammed Ali

“To avoid criticism do nothing, say nothing, be nothing.” -Elbert Hubbard, 1856-1915

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” -Mark Twain

“Having a moment of clarity was one thing; I’d had moments like that before. It had to be followed with a dedicated push of daily exercise. It’s a trite axiom, but practice DOES make perfect. If you want to be a strong swimmer or an accomplished musician, you have to practice. It’s the same with sobriety, though the stakes are higher. If you don’t practice your program every day, you’re putting yourself in a position where you could fly out of the orbit one more time.”  -Anthony Kiedis, singer of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, from his book, Scar Tissue

“I am an optimist. It does not seem too much use being anything else.” -Winston Churchill

“There was an uncommon array of people in there [rehab] with me, and I became friends with all of them. You recognize the possibility of your own demise in the lives of these other people. You’re doing the same thing they are, but you can’t see it in yourself. However, you start seeing all of these tragedies and potential miracles in other people. It’s a real eye- and heart-opening situation.”

-Anthony Kiedis, singer of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, from his book, Scar Tissue

“The more difficult the victory, the greater the happiness in winning.” -Pele

“You must be the change you want to see in the world.” -Mahatma Gandhi

I found all these inspiring. Of course, the most inspiring thing is seeing people take such wisdom to heart and live rewarding and meaningful lives!
